Atlanta to Host 2008 USA Open Volleyball Championships
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 18, 2007) – USA Volleyball announced that the 2008 USA Open Volleyball Championships will be held May 24-31, 2008, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Ga. The Marriott Marquis will serve as the headquarter hotel for the USA Volleyball Annual Meetings.
“The City of Atlanta has stepped up as a great partner of USA Volleyball in staging major volleyball events in the last four years,” USA Volleyball Managing Director of Events Michael Chandler said. “We look forward to having the USA Open Volleyball Championships return to Atlanta in 2008.”
For 78 years, USA Volleyball has showcased its USA Open Volleyball Championships in 28 different states and 54 various cities. There are only 18 cities that have hosted the event on multiple occasions, Atlanta being one of them. The 2008 Open marks the second time the event has taken place at the Georgia World Congress Center, with the event previously being hosted there in 2004.
USA Volleyball has embarked upon the Gate City of the South on three other occasions: 2003 and 2006 USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championship and the 2007 USA Junior Olympic Boys’ Volleyball Championship.
The USA Open Volleyball Championships is one of the largest national championships in any sport in the United States, featuring the sport of volleyball from coast-to-coast. Each year the Open brings together players with a passion for volleyball on all skill levels including: men’s and women’s Open Divisions (Open, AA, A, BB and B) and men’s and women’s age division flights. A bridge is also gapped from junior-level to collegiate players. It serves different meanings and purposes among all competitors.
The Georgia World Congress Center is located in the heart of Atlanta’s downtown entertainment district featuring extraordinary shopping, delectable dinning and world-class entertainment. Top local attractions include the Georgia Aquarium, CNN Center, Georgia Dome, Philips Arena, Turner Field and World of Coca-Cola.
“The participants in Atlanta will enjoy the close proximity of hotels to the playing venue,” Chandler said. “When competitors are not in action, there is plenty of great entertainment and things to do nearby.”
Dallas Named Host of 2008 USA Junior Olympic Girls' Volleyball Championships
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (August 13, 2007) – Located in the heart of the city’s downtown, the Dallas Convention Center will play host to the 2008 USA Junior Olympic Girls' Volleyball Championships held June 26 to July 5, USA Volleyball announced today. Adam’s Mark Hotel will serve as the headquarters for the event.
It has been a decade, but the city of Dallas is familiar to USA Volleyball’s Junior Olympic Championships. In 1998, both the boys’ and girls’ tournaments were played out in the city that likes to live large and think big.
“The USA Junior Olympic Girls' Volleyball Championships haven’t been to Dallas since 1998, so it is great to bring it back to this great city,” USA Volleyball Managing Director of Events Michael Chandler said. “The Dallas Convention Center is a great venue to host this event, along with the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau.”
USA Volleyball has previously embarked upon Dallas in 2002 as it hosted the USA Open Volleyball Championships for adults.
“Not only does Dallas feature a fantastic venue for our competitors,” Chandler said, “but when the players are not on the court, the city offers plenty of things to see and do within a reasonable distance from the hotels and convention center.”
The Dallas Convention Center and Adam’s Mark Hotel are both conveniently located among exceptional dining opportunities and splendid shopping. The hotel itself offers five different ways to tickle your taste buds, ranging from a fast-paced bagel shop to an exquisite AAA Four-Diamond restaurant. As for shopping, competitors are within 10 minutes of the acclaimed Mockingbird Station, featuring more than 90 shops and restaurants, as well as Highland Park Village, America’s oldest shopping center. Less than two blocks away is Plaza of the Americas, home to nearly 40 shops, restaurants and personal services. Also nestled nearby are the Dallas Zoo and the Dallas Art District with numerous entertainment venues.
Going into its 29th running, the USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championship attracts nearly 8,500 athletes annually to the event hosted by USA Volleyball. The tournament will crown 19 champions in age divisions ranging from 12 to 18. Further, the event draws not only thousands of family and friends, but hundreds of college recruiters looking for the next top players for their programs.
Salt Lake City Suburb Sandy City Awarded 2008 USA Junior Olympic Boys’ Volleyball Championships
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 24, 2007) – USA Volleyball will bring its signature annual boys’ youth national championship event – the USA Junior Olympic Boys’ Volleyball Championships – to the South Towne Exposition Center in Sandy City, Utah. The event, which will showcase approximately 450 of the best junior boys’ teams from around the country, will be held July 2-9, 2008.
The 2008 USA Junior Olympic Boys’ Volleyball Championships marks the fourth premier national volleyball championship event staged in Utah over the last eight years. The State of Utah has hosted the 2001, 2002 and 2005 USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships.
“We are excited about bringing another USA Volleyball Junior Olympic national championship event to Utah,” said Mike Chandler, USA Volleyball’s managing director of events. “The USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships events previously held in Utah were a tremendous success due to the great support received from the local organizing committee and the community. We are excited to be returning to Utah.”
The USA Junior Olympic Boys’ Volleyball Championships will crown five Open Division titles at each age group between 14 and 18. In addition, seven Club Division titles will be contested in the 12-year-old category through under-18.
The USA Junior Olympic Boys’ Volleyball Championships will showcase high-level athletic competition as well as deliver a tremendous economic impact. The 2008 event is expected to generate approximately $20-$25 million to the local economy, according to the State of Utah economic impact numbers.
“The State of Utah is excited to once again host a USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Championships,” said Utah Governor Jon M. Huntsman Jr. “This is another example of our continued efforts to expand upon Utah’s Olympic legacy by capitalizing on sport as a key economic development and tourism tool as we continue to build and grow our sport brand.”
“Sports have become a key economic driver for our state,” said Jeff Robbins, president and CEO of the Utah Sports Commission. “Having this major national youth volleyball event come to Utah will bring significant economic impact and image building opportunities.”
Volleyball has become a major thrust of the Sports Commission’s goal of positioning Utah’s sports brand, “The State of Sport,” and targeted volleyball in working with the Intermountain Volleyball Association several years ago in hopes of attracting national and international competition to Utah.
“IVA is thrilled to be hosting another USAV Championship event in Utah” said Kim Norman, executive director of Intermountain Volleyball Association.
