High Performance Selections for Boys' Youth Age Group (born in 1991 or 1992)
Thank you for participating in the 2008 USA Volleyball High Performance Tryouts!
For all Boys’ Youth Age Group tryout participants, there is an individual, eight-digit ID Selection Code that we use to communicate your level of HP Program selection (or non-selection). That ID Code represents:
- your two-digit month of birth, followed by
- your two-digit day of birth, followed by
- the last four digits of your Social Security Number.
For example, if you were born on February 8th (02/08 – regardless of which year), and the last four digits of your SSN are 1234, your code would be 02081234. If you did not provide us with the last four digits of your SSN, then your MJNT ID Selection Code would be listed as 0208XXXX.
Please call us if you have a question regarding your code.
We are proud to announce USAV’s 2008 High Performance Boys’ Youth programs:
- The 2008 USA Boys’ Youth National Training Team (19 selected athletes, plus alternates), which will train at Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center, beginning in mid July. The final squad of 12 athletes will then participate in the NORCECA Boys’ Youth Continental Championships tournament.
The NORCECA Boys’ Youth Continental Championships will be held in the U.S. (Ft. Lauderdale) for the first time ever. This tournament is a qualifying tournament for 2009 World Championships.
- Head Coach, Andy Read, Long Beach State University,
- Asst Coach, Sean Byron, Ohio State University, and

Boys’ Youth Athlete ID Selection Codes and Program-Page Links
Provided below is a descending series of High Performance Boys’ Youth Program selections and non-selections. For each of these, there is:
- a program title,
- a table containing the ID Selection Codes, and
- a link to the specific HP Program Description page.
For the USA Boys’ Youth National Training Team, there are the top nineteen players selected as the main invitees. Following that, there are alternates identified who will be invited to participate on the Boys’ Youth National Training Team should any of those top nineteen players be unable to participate. These alternates are automatically invited to participate in the USA Boys Youth A2 Program, so those athletes and their families should review the Program Description for both the BYNTT and the BYA2.
We STRONGLY encourage alternates to the BYNTT to go ahead and sign up and pay for the BYA2 program if they are interested in attending that program. If those players are then called up to the BYNTT, we will refund any payments that have been made and will just move over any paperwork.
There also are athletes identified as alternates to the BYA2 program. Again, all BYA2 alternates are automatically invited to the USA High Performance Development Program, and athletes and families should go ahead and confirm and pay for the High Performance Development Program if they are interested in attending. If those players are then called up to the BYA2, we will just move over any paperwork or payments that have been made to the BYA2 program.
It is extremely important to note that all of these programs require your confirmation, commitment and/or payment in order to secure your slot. All programs have deadlines and many (particularly the HP Development Program) are overbooked, based on previous years’ acceptance percentages.
Please do not delay in deciding upon whether choice or acceptance of program. If you do, you might be too late. We do not put players’ names into USA Website Rosters until that commitment and payment has been made. Thanks!

Alternates to 2008 USA Boys’ Youth National Training Team
The athletes selected as alternates to the 2008 USA Boys’ YNTT will get their names listed here on the website, even if they are not called up to the BYNTT, once the BYNTT roster has been confirmed.
Most importantly, these athletes and families should treat this like a Boys’ Youth A2 Program selection and invitation, because only rarely do athletes not accept a National Team selection.

Invitees to 2008 USA Boys’ Youth A2 Camp & Competition
I want to first advise 2008 Boys’ Youth HP Tryout attendees that some of you will be disappointed in your tryout results. Most of this has to do with the level that’s right below the Youth National Team level (Boys’ Youth A2 and slightly below) and particularly in the outside hitter position.
Although we have forty spots for players in the Youth A2, at tryouts this year, we identified between eighty and ninety athletes who would have made the Youth A2 Team two or three years ago. We had twenty-four outside hitters that were barely distinguishable – or who had offsetting skills or levels of athleticism.
It basically came down to the criteria that most of the Youth A2 selected players, were players that were evaluated by at least one coach to be in consideration for Youth National Team. Many of you, who expect to make the Youth A2 Program, are going to find that you were slightly beaten out by a player at one of the other tryouts. I hope this inspires you to work harder.

Again, it is not likely that many of these alternates will be called up to the Boys’ Youth A2 Program. Therefore, these athletes and families should treat this like a Boys’ High Performance Development Program selection. These athletes will be notified if an A2 spot becomes available.

All the athletes listed below are invited to the same Boys’ HP Development Program. However, I would like to highlight the efforts of the forty-four athletes in the first box. These athletes would have been good enough to make the Boys’ Youth A2 Program just two or three years ago.

USA Boys’ High Performance Development Program description page.
Non-Selected Athletes for 2008
I would like these athletes to understand the level of competition that was evident at the 2008 Boys’ High Performance tryouts. Literally, we could double the number of programs we offer each summer in order to accommodate all of the good players. I have to say that this improvement of skill in boys’ volleyball players from across the country is a good thing.
While not being selected for a USA Program is unfortunate, I hope that all non-selected athletes take this as a challenge to work harder and improve.
