USA Lines Up to Receive Championship TrophyJuly 30, 2006 - The U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team swept Dominican Republic 25-13, 25-22, 25-13 in the championship match of the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship held at the University of Florida’s O’Connell Center in Gainesville. Team USA’s Tarah Murrey (El Cerrito, Calif.) was selected as the tournament most valuable player. She scored a tournament-high 92 points over the six-day event. Murrey also captured the best scorer and best spiker awards for the tournament. The U.S. and Dominican Republic have earned entries into the 2007 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship (U-18) held at Mexicali and Tijuana, Mexico. NORCECA will have a third team in the tournament as Mexico has a berth as the host country. The U.S. captured six of the nine tournament awards with Sydney Yogi earning the best libero honor, Alexandra Hunt winning the best server honor and Kanani Herring picking up the best receiver award. Other awards went to Canada’s Becky Pavan for best blocker, Puerto Rico’s Maria Escoto for best defense and Jenifer Nogueras for best setter.More

July 30, 2006 - Puerto Rico swept Canada 25-23, 25-20, 27-25 Sunday afternoon for third place at the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship at the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Joely Narvaez produced a match-high 20 points for Puerto Rico as she was credited with 17 kills and three aces. She hit 36 percent for the match on 33 swings. Shirley Ferrer and Stephanie Enright tallied nine points apiece in the victory. Ferrer chalked up five kills, two aces and two blocks, while Enright turned in five kills and four aces. Jenifer Nogueras handed out 24 assists for Puerto Rico, which hit 18 percent as a team. More

July 30, 2006 - Mexico captured fifth place at the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-14 victory over Honduras Sunday afternoon at the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Carolina Carranza sparked Mexico with 12 points on 10 kills and two blocks, while Valery Garza added 11 points all on kills and nine digs. She hit 45 percent for the match on 20 attacks. Lorena Sanchez contributed 10 points that included five aces, four kills and a block. Mariel Galvan tacked on a match-high 10 digs while Alejandra Perales dealt out 24 assists in the victory. Mexico hit 33 percent as a team and held a 13-7 ace advantage. More

USA's Kelsey BrandlJuly 29, 2006 - In a battle of undefeated teams in the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship, the U.S. had the last momentum swing in its favor to defeat Dominican Republic 25-10, 19-25, 25-20, 25-27, 15-9 Saturday evening at the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Today was the last day of round-robin preliminary action with the classification matches to be played on July 30. The teams, who had already gained spots in the championship match after victories on July 28, will have a rematch at 7:30 p.m. ET on July 30 for the tournament title. Both the U.S. and Dominican Republic have qualified for the 2007 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship (U-18) held at Mexicali and Tijuana, Mexico. NORCECA will have a third team in the tournament as Mexico has a berth as the host country. Tarah Murrey sparked Team USA with 20 points on 14 kills, four blocks and two aces. More

July 29, 2006 - Puerto Rico secured a spot in the third-place match of the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-18 victory over Mexico on Saturday evening at the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Both teams entered the match with identical 1-3 records and competing for the second spot in the third-place classification match on July 30 at 5:30 p.m. ET. Puerto Rico (2-3) will play Canada (3-2) for third place, while Mexico (1-4) will play Honduras (0-5) at 2:30 p.m. ET on July 30. More

July 29, 2006 - Canada improved to 3-2 in the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship with a 25-14, 25-13, 25-7 victory over Honduras on the final day of round-robin competition Saturday afternoon at the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Canada will play the winner of Mexico and Puerto Rico (played at 5:30 p.m. ET today) on July 30 at 5:30 p.m. ET for third place. Honduras will face the loser of Mexico and Puerto Rico on July 30 at 2:30 p.m. in the fifth-place match. More

USA's Kelsey MahoneyJuly 28, 2006 - Despite dropping its only set of the tournament, the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team qualified for the 2007 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship (U-18) with a 25-18, 25-18, 21-25, 25-18 victory over Canada Friday evening at the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship hosted by the University of Florida in Gainesville. The U.S., which is undefeated in the NORCECA Tournament with a 4-0 record, concludes the preliminary round-robin portion of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. ET against undefeated Dominican Republic (4-0) on July 29. Team USA and Dominican Republic, the only remaining undefeated teams, have also secured the two spots in the gold-medal match of the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship regardless of the outcome on July 29 and will play twice in as many nights. The championship match will be July 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET.More

July 28, 2006 - Dominican Republic was pushed to five sets by Mexico, but eventually prevailed 22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 30-32, 15-11 to improve to 4-0 at the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship held at the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dominican Republic plays the United States on the final day of round-robin action on July 29 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Dominican Republic has already assured itself of at least a spot in the gold-medal match on July 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET and could conceivably play the United States two matches in a row. The U.S., which plays Canada at 7:30 p.m. ET later today, is currently undefeated as well in the tournament with a 3-0 record. Team USA would advance to the gold-medal match with a victory over Canada.More

July 28, 2006 - Puerto Rico claimed its first victory in the 2006 NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship with a 25-9, 25-8, 25-14 victory over Honduras Friday afternoon at the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Puerto Rico improves to 1-3 and wraps up tournament preliminary matches on July 29 against Mexico at 5:30 p.m. ET. Honduras, 0-4 in the six-team tournament, concludes the round-robin format at 2:30 p.m. ET against Canada. Later today, Dominican Republic plays Mexico at 5:30 p.m. ET and the U.S. hosts Canada at 7:30 p.m. ET. More

USA's Jordan MeredithJuly 27, 2006 - The U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team defeated Puerto Rico 25-13, 25-14, 25-12 Thursday evening during the third day of competition at the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship held at the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. The U.S. improves to 3-0 with the victory, while Puerto Rico falls to 0-3 for the tournament. Dominican Republic and the U.S. share the league in the tournament with identical 3-0 records, while Canada is third in the tournament at 2-1. Tarah Murrey sparked the U.S. with 17 points with 15 kills, one ace and a block. She hit 42 percent for the match with 26 attempts. Alexandra Hunt added 10 points with eight kills, an ace and a block. Kanani Herring turned in nine points on seven kills and two aces. Kendall Bateman handed out 29 assists with three aces as Team USA hit 49 percent as a team. Rachael Adams hit 83 percent with five kills on six attempts to go with two blocks. July 27, 2006 - Dominican Republic overcame a set loss to defeat Canada 25-23, 18-25, 26-24, 25-21 Thursday night during NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship action at the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dominican Republic improved to 3-0 in the tournament, while Canada dropped its first of three matches in the event. Both teams struggled to find an offensive groove. Dominican Republic hit 10 percent as a team on 99 swings, while Canada hit .002 as a team with 24 attack errors. More

July 27, 2006 - Mexico gained its first victory in the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship with a 25-6, 25-14, 25-12 victory over Honduras on Thursday afternoon at the O’Connell Center on the campus of University of Florida in Gainesville. Mexico won the match with a balanced offense of five players scoring double-digit points. Karla Alonso tallied a match-high 12 points with nine kills. Xitlali Corrujedo and Ana Rios tacked on 11 points apiece in the victory. Carolina Carranza and Lorena Sanchez turned in 10 points each for Mexico. More

The U.S. improves to 2-0 in the tournament and is tied with Dominican Republic and Canada. Mexico falls to 0-2 in the tournament. Kanani Herring sparked the U.S. with a match-high 17 points that included 10 kills, five aces and two blocks. Tarah Murrey chipped in 10 points on four kills, five aces and a block. July 26, 2006 - Canada overcame a first-set loss to defeat Puerto Rico 21-25, 25-18, 25-23, 27-17 Wednesday evening during the second day of the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championships held at the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Canada improves to 2-0 in the tournament, while Puerto Rico falls to 0-2. Puerto Rico will face tournament host United States in its next match on July 27 at 7:30 p.m. ET. USA's Jordan MeredithJuly 25, 2006 - Tarah Murrey scored 14 points in leading the U.S. Girls’ National Team to a 25-14, 25-9, 25-10 victory over Honduras in the opening round of the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Volleyball Championship Tuesday evening at the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida at Gainesville. Murrey hit 69 percent with 10 kills on 13 kills to go with three aces and a block. Michelle Bartsch chipped in seven kills, three blocks and an ace as part of an 11-point night. Alexandra Hunt served eight of Team USA’s 13 aces for the night to go with four kills for 12 points. Kelsey Brandl added three kills and three blocks in two sets of action for six points. July 25, 2006 - Dominican Republic overcame a two-set deficit and nearly lost a 9-2 lead in set five to win 15-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-11 Tuesday evening during the first day of the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship at the O’Connell Center on the campus of University of Florida in Gainesville. Dominican Republic jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the deciding fifth set, only to see Puerto Rico rally to tie the set at 11-all behind the serving Joely Narvaez. Dominican Republic recovered after calling timeout by scoring four consecutive points to close out the match. More

July 25, 2006 - Canada defeated Mexico 25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 25-22 Tuesday afternoon on the first day of the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Volleyball Championship held at the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida at Gainesville, Fla. Canada’s Becky Pavan led her team to victory with 14 points on nine kills, four blocks and an ace. Megan Ellis added 13 points, while Shanice Marcelle tacked on 12 points in the victory. July 24, 2006 - Teams from six nations converge on Gainesville, Fla., for the biannual NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Championship (U-18) held July 25-30 at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on the campus of University of Florida. The tournament winner qualifies for the 2007 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship (U-18). United States, Canada, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico and Puerto Rico are entered in this year’s NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Championship vying for a spot in next year’s FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship.
