NORTHERN LIGHTS QUALIFIER
Minneapolis, Minnesota
The Northern Lights Qualifier (NLQ) was moved to Minneapolis in 1993 by YJOV after the group in Manteno, Ill., was unable to accommodate its growth. In 1993 the number of teams in the event was 152. The tournament was run in five schools around the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.
Over the next five years the event moved its headquarters from schools into two mini-convention center settings. In 1999 Northern Lights Qualifier used 180,000-square feet in the Minneapolis Convention Center for the first time.
By 2002 the event was using the entire convention center, 400,000-square feet and had 500+ teams.
Now in its 16th year, the NLQ has grown to approximately 700 teams, requires two weekends, 600,000-square feet and 90+ courts.
The NLQ is the leader in tournament technology. In the late 1990s the event was the first tournament to utilize computer registration via a custom programs sent to the teams by mail. Since that time we have developed and implemented the paperless Real Time Results©, free online spectator programs & schedules, and automated check in.
