2002 - NORCECA Junior Girls Continental Championships (Silver Medal)…NORCECA
Youth Girls Continental Championships (Gold Medal).
INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: 2003 - Earned a bronze medal as the youngest member
of the USA women's national training team at the 2003 Pan American Games in
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic…Scored 11 points on nine kills and two blocks
in the bronze-medal match as the USA defeated Brazil, 3-1, to finish the
tournament with a record of 4-2…Became a starter on the right side two matches
into the tournament…Finished eighth among all players at 1.44 digs per set. She
also ranked fifth on the team in scoring with 43 total points (35 kills, six
blocks, two aces), a number that ranked her 29th among all players in the
tournament. 2002 - Earned a gold medal as a member of the USA Girl's Youth
National Team at the 2002 NORCECA Youth Girls Continental Championships in
Salt Lake City, Utah…The team earned an automatic berth to the 2003 FIVB Girl's
Under-18 World Championships after going 5-0 and losing just one set at the
NORCECA tournament…Cynthia was named Best Serve-Receiver at the NORCECA
tournament…Also earned a silver medal as a member of the USA Women's Junior
National Team at the 2002 NORCECA Junior Women's Continental Championships
in Puerto Rico.
HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS: 2003 - Became the first junior to be named Gatorade
National High School Volleyball Player of the Year…Registered 550 kills, 46
blocks and 38 service aces, and was the only high school player to be invited
to train with the U.S. National Team in preparation for the 2004 Summer
Olympics in Athens…Also named first team All-California Interscholastic
Federation (Southern Section), to the Los Angeles Times Girls Volleyball
All-Star Team and a PrepVolleyball.com High School All-American. 2002 - Named
National Sophomore of the Year by Student Sports magazine after leading Long
Beach Wilson to a runner-up finish at the California state high school
volleyball championships…Also named Player of the Year by the Los Angeles
Times…Earned CIF I-AA Most Valuable Player honors in addition to first-team
All-State and first-team All-Moore League…Wilson finished second at the CIF
Southern Section championships. 2001 - Named National Freshman of the Year
by Student Sports magazine after leading Long Beach Wilson to the CIF
Southern Section championship.
CLUB VOLLEYBALL: 2003 - Named to the all-tournament team in the 17-Open
division at the USA Junior Olympic Girls Volleyball Championships in Atlanta
as her team (Club Long Beach) finished second overall. 2002 - Named to the
all-tournament team in the 17-Club division at the USA Junior Olympic Girls
Volleyball Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, as her team (Club Long
Beach) finished fifth overall. 2001 - Named to the all-tournament team in
the 15-Open division at the USA Junior Olympic Girls Volleyball Championships
in Salt Lake City, Utah.
PERSONAL: Born Cynthia Jane Barboza on Feb. 7, 1987 in Bellflower, Calif. …Parents
are Robert and Jane Barboza…Also has a brother, David (18)…At age 17 Cynthia is
the youngest member of the USA women's national volleyball training team…While
English is her first spoken language, Spanish was her first written language…Is
scheduled to graduate from Long Beach Wilson High School in 2005.
