U.S. Men Defeat Poland; Take World League Bronze

(July 15, 2007) -- The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team defeated hometown favorite Poland, 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19) on Sunday for a third-place finish at the FIVB World League in Katowice, Poland. With the victory, the U.S. Men complete World League with a 12-4 record. They also get a little revenge for an earlier 0-3 (22-25, 34-36, 23-25) loss to Poland (14-2) in final-round, pool-play action.

Third place is the best World League finish for the United States since 1992, when it also placed third. More






U.S. Men Suffer Semifinal Setback to Russia at World League

U.S. Men Defeat France, Advance to World League Semifinals

(July 12, 2007) -- The U.S. Men's National Team came back from a 13-19 deficit in the third set to defeat France, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 28-26) in the final round of the FIVB World League on Thursday in Katowice, Poland. The victory ensures that the U.S. Men (1-0) will advance to Saturday’s semifinals, as France drops to 0-2 in Pool E. Team USA will face hometown favorite Poland (1-0) on Friday (2 p.m. EDT) to determine the pool winner. The Pool E winner will face the second-place team from Pool F in the semifinals and vice versa. It is the first time the United States has advanced to the World League semifinals since it finished third in 1992. More

(June 2, 2007) -- The U.S. Men’s National Team didn’t make it easy on itself, but with timely serving from Gabe Gardner, it overcame some inspired play by Japan to win its second FIVB World League match 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-18) on Saturday at the Resch Center. The victory improves the United States’ World League record to 3-1 and it keeps the Pool B lead. Japan falls to 0-4 in Pool B. More

(May 31, 2007) -- Although they aren’t exactly “home” contests, the U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team knows how important it is to win its matches in the United States. After splitting its first two matches with France on May 26-27 in Portland, Ore., the U.S. Men, who are based in Anaheim, Calif., will travel to the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis., for its second set of FIVB World League matches on June 1-2. U.S. Men Face France on World League Opening Weekend

(May 22, 2007) – The U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team is looking for a little payback as it faces France in the opening weekend of the FIVB World League at 7 p.m. on May 26 and at 5 p.m. on May 27 at the Chiles Center in Portland, Ore. In November, the French team beat the U.S. Men in five hard-fought sets (17-25, 25-12, 24-26, 25-17, 15-11) at the FIVB World Championships in Japan. The French went on to finish sixth and the United States finished 10th. But that was then and this is now. More

March Toward Beijing Begins in Portland

Read the Portland Tribune's story about the World League: The road to the 2008 Olympics starts in Portland for the United States men's volleyball team. The U.S., ranked eighth in the world, will face No. 7 France in two World League matches May 26 and May 27 at the Chiles Center. Only 12 teams qualify for the Beijing Games. The first of three opportunities for the U.S. men to qualify will be in September, and the annual World League tournament is a big part of the squad’s preparation for that. More

Poland to Host World League Finals

(March 21, 2007) - The FIVB is pleased to announce that the venue for the 2007 World League Finals has been confirmed to Katowice, Poland, and at the request of Italy, which was originally announced as the 2007 host, Rome will host the 2008 World League Finals. More

Portland, Green Bay to Host World Class Men’s Volleyball

ANAHEIM, Calif. (March 9, 2007) – USA Volleyball has announced that Portland, Ore., and Green Bay, Wis., will host the first two weekends of domestic competition when the U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team plays in the 2007 FIVB World League.

The FIVB World League is an elite men’s volleyball competition in which the world’s best teams are divided into four pools and play for six straight weekends. Winners from each pool go on to the finals, along with the host country and a wild-card pick. The 2007 FIVB World League will be an important tune-up for the U.S. Men as they prepare for qualifying events for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

The other teams in Pool B with Team USA are Italy, ranked No. 2 in the world, France, ranked seventh, and Japan, which is ranked 10th.

The U.S. Men, ranked eighth in the world, will square off twice against France at 7 p.m. PT on Saturday, May 26 and at 5 p.m. PT on Sunday, May 27 at the University of Portland Chiles Arena.

Tickets are available through America’s Best at http://www.americasbestusa.com or by calling (503) 936-3203. Ticket prices have been announced at $10, $15 and $20 for the matches.

The following weekend, Team USA will move on to the Resch Center in Green Bay to face Japan at 7 p.m. CT on both Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2.

Tickets will go on sale March 24 at all Oneida Casino Ticket Star locations, the Resch Center Box Office, by phone at (800) 895-0071 or by visiting http://www.ticketstaronline.com. The prices are $15 for a single night match (June 1 or 2) and $25 for both nights.

Ticket and site information for the final domestic weekend of World League, to be played against Italy on the weekend of June 15-17, will be announced soon.

ESPNU will broadcast all the matches in the United States on the same day in which the match is played. It will also broadcast the World League Finals.

“Brian Parrott in Portland has organized many successful matches for us, including the sold-out matches between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1985 in Portland and Seattle,” said USA Volleyball CEO Doug Beal. “He puts on quality sporting events that get spectators in the seats.

The U.S. Men will play six straight weekends of World League tournaments from May 25-June 30. The World League finals are set for July 11-15.

U.S. Men’s Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon is looking forward to seeing his team improve on its 10th-place finish at the 2006 World League.

“It’s a very difficult schedule. We will have to play in North America, Asia and Europe over the six weeks,” he said. “But it’s really, really good for our team to be playing matches against these opponents.

“We are going to be using World League to look at different lineups in preparation for the NORCECA Championships and FIVB World Cup tournament. Those tournaments will be the first steps to our Olympic qualifying.”
