USAV Names Knipe its WUG Coach
USA Volleyball has named Long Beach State Men’s Volleyball Head Coach Alan Knipe as its head coach for the World University Games, which will be Aug. 8-18 in Bangkok, Thailand. It will be Knipe’s second trip to the World University Games. In 1991, he traveled to Sheffield, England as a player; where the U.S. team won the silver medal. Poland took the gold that year. MORE

HELP WANTED
The U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team in Anaheim, Calif., is seeking qualified candidates for positions as volunteer coaching aides for the summer of 2007 -- May through September. Coaches aides will assist in the conducting of team practices. This includes, but is not limited to running of drills, hitting balls, scoring, timing, etc. Please submit your resume via e-mail to Ron Larsen, assistant coach. Review of materials will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled.

Boys' and Men's High Performance Invitees Named

USA Volleyball has posted the names of players invited for its national- and A2-level boys’ and men’s volleyball programs to the USA Volleyball website. These are not considered full program rosters until athletes confirm their participation in the program. USA Volleyball will not post the names of those invited to the Boys' High Performance Development program until athletes determine which of the three offered development camps they choose to attend.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL UPDATE

The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (D III) has added men’s volleyball as an official conference sport and several conference schools are now considering adding varsity programs. There will be a conference championship in the 2007-08 season… SUNY Institute of Technology will be adding men’s volleyball as a varsity sport in the 2007-08 season and will be part of the NECVA…. Fontbonne University in St Louis is adding a team in 20 07-08 and will be an independent school. There is pressure on the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) to add men’s volleyball as a conference sport… In Division II, St Andrews Presbyterian College in North Carolina is adding a men’s team next season to join Lees-McRae and Mount Olive in the Carolinas Conference, which is also holding discussions about the potential of adding men’s volleyball as a new conference sport… In Division I, the University at Buffalo has held two public forums to discuss adding men’s volleyball at their school. It would most likely become part of the MIVA but does have the option to join the EIVA... The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and USA Volleyball, in conjunction with Molten U.S.A., Inc., are pleased to announce Carthage College as the 2007 Molten Division III Men's Invitational Volleyball Championship Midwest/West Region representative. The tournament will be hosted by Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., on April 13-14. As the host institution, Juniata receives an automatic berth into the four-team field. After sweeping through the NECVA tournament this past weekend, Stevens Institute of Technology will represent its conference in Huntingdon. Juniata and Springfield College will square off on April 7 for the EIVA Division III Championship. Since Juniata gains entrance in the Molten as host institution, Springfield will also represent the EIVA in Huntingdon, regardless of the outcome of the EIVA Division III Championship match.

The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team in Anaheim, Calif., is seeking a qualified candidate for a volunteer internship position for the summer of 2007 -- May through September. Responsibilities include assisting in the management of the office, soliciting and maintaining sponsorships, travel arrangements, helping with team practices, and other duties as assigned. Required qualifications include strong communication skills and a good knowledge of computers. An interest in volleyball would also be of use. Please submit your resume via e-mail to Ron Larsen, assistant coach. Review of materials will begin April 1, 2007 and continue until the position is filled.

These highly regarded youth sports industry annual awards recognize coaches, administrators, officials and volunteers from hometown communities through the United States who through their actions and professionalism have demonstrated to young people that sports teach respect, initiative, values and excellence. Sophomore outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), a member of the 2006 USA Volleyball Men’s Junior National Team, pounded a career-high and new rally-scoring-era record 35 kills as the sixth-ranked Penn State men’s volleyball team outlasted fourth-ranked UC Santa Barbara in five games (30-24, 30-28, 28-30, 19-30, 19-17) on March 12 in Santa Barbara, Calif. In addition to Anderson’s 35 kills, which came on .452 hitting, sophomore middle hitter Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio), also a U.S. Junior National Team member, contributed 14 kills on .476 hitting. As a team, Penn State attacked at a .385 clip as UC Santa Barbara hit .383... UC Santa Barbara men’s volleyball player Evan Patak, who played with the U.S. National Team in 2003 at the World University Games, has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Co-Player of the Week. Patak helped lead the fifth-ranked Gauchos to a pair of league wins over Pacific and Stanford last week. It is the third time this season that Patak has received the honor and he shares this week’s accolades with Dio Dante, a middle blocker from the University of Hawai’i.
