Thunderbirds Still Spreading Their Wings
The boys volleyball team at Hinkley High School in Aurora, Colo., hasn't won a match this season. But last year, the team didn't even exist. Thanks to the team's hard work, and a little help from a grant from USA Volleyball and the Rocky Mountain Region, the Thunderbirds soon may be taking flight. MORE

Boys Volleyball Tournament Raises Funds for Teen with Cancer

The Space Needle Volleyball Foundation (SNVF) in Washington raised $1,200 at a boys volleyball tournament on April 14 to support "The Shayla Fund".

Shayla Holwegner, a sophomore middle blocker at Eisenhower High School in Yakima, Wash., fractured her femur on Feb. 25 while playing for the Eisenhower Spikers Volleyball Club during a match at nearby Pasco, Wash. After surgery to repair the leg with an optimistic forecast for full recovery, doctors discovered a rare form of bone cancer, osteosarcoma, when testing an unknown tissue found in Shayla's leg during the operation. The tragic twist has turned the 16-year-old's life into chaos. There are only 250 cases of this type of bone cancer in the United States for Shayla's age group. MORE
