Big Sisters and Little Sisters Unite
The Virginia Beach Volleyball Academy has set up a unique method to involve teamwork within its club.
The "big-sister" mentorship program is underway at VBVBA (Virginia Beach Volleyball Academy). The big sisters, comprised of players from the VBVBA 16s, 17s and 18s club members, will attend their "little sisters" practice at least once a month. The big sisters will give their little sisters one-on-one pointers and advice. The "little sisters" will act like a booster club for their big sisters. Each week the "little sisters" spend about 20 minutes at the end of one of their practices and make "good luck" signs or cards for upcoming tournaments for their "big sisters."
The 'sisters' held a social to meet one another and to allow for the younger players to ask questions of their new big sisters. The young players made their big sisters tye-dye t-shirts and presented them.
According to VBVBA 12s coach Tonya Boser, the program has been beneficial for both age groups. "This program means a lot to the young players. Each practice they talk about their "big sisters" and are always egar to watch them play. They love to see what they can aspire to."
