ACADEMIC SPOTLIGHT - KATE ZIMMER
Kate Zimmer, a middle blocker for Maryland Juniors 17 Yellow National Team, is a junior at North Hagerstown High School (Md.). She is enrolled in North High's International Baccalaureate Program (IB) and maintains a 4.5 grade point average. She ranks sixth in her class. MORE

TEACHING THE RULES BY OFFICIATING, SCOREKEEPING

Janet Cairns provides a summary article on the benefits of teaching junior players how to officiate and keep the official scorebook. She is a proponent that our junior players should learn the rules and participate as responsible officials. Officiating is part of the game from juniors to adults. She believes that if we teach them, encourage them and challenge our young players along with explaining the importance and responsibilities, they will become well-rounded volleyball citizens for years to come. REcRUITING CORNER - TIPS FOR THE COLLEGE PROSPECT
Matt Peck, head women's volleyball coach at Middle Tennessee State University, completed his third season leading the Blue Raiders in grand style last fall. He mentored Middle Tennessee to its first NCAA Division I Tournament victory (3-2 win over Louisville) before losing to Ohio State in the second round. In addition, Peck has led the Blue Raiders to their only Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship appearance and won the event in 2006. Overall, he has 23 years of coaching experience and holds a 615-222 record. Prior to arriving at Middle Tennessee in February 2004, Peck spent nine seasons at the University of North Alabama. In 2003, he led the UNA to an NCAA Division II National Championship title and was named the 2003 AVCA Division II National Coach of the Year. MORE

The Austin Sports Center, home of Austin Junior Volleyball, is a state of the art facility with many amenities. The recreational space has two 10,000 square foot gyms with enough room for four competition or six practice volleyball courts. SHAYLA HOLWEGNER'S BATTLE AGAINST CANCER
Shayla Holwegner, a sophomore middle blocker at Eisenhower High School in Yakima, Wash., broke her leg on Feb. 25 while playing for the Spikers Volleyball Club at Pasco, Wash. After surgery to repair the leg, doctors discovered bone cancer turning the 16-year-old's life into chaos. MORE
USAV HIGH PERFORMANCE ATLANTA TRYOUT A RECORD
The USA Volleyball High Performance tryouts held in Atlanta on April 5 at the World Congress Center shattered the existing organization record for tryout participants for a single site. MORE.

USA VOLLEYBALL GIRLS' INVITATIONAL
The USA Volleyball Girls Invitational will take place in Atlanta, Ga., at the Georgia World Congress Center on June 7-10. This event also welcomes teams participating in the Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships. Make this the year your team experiences a National Level competition. To add to your experience USA Volleyball has extended invitations to teams from Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico! More.

ATTEND THE BEIJING 2008 OLYMPIC GAMES IN STYLE
Have you dreamed of watching the Olympic Games in person - getting a chance to see history in the making at arguably one of the most important societal events in our time? USA Volleyball, in conjunction with Jet Set Sports and CoSport, will conduct an auction for a 2008 Olympic Games package that will host two people in Beijing for five days and four nights. The package will include double occupancy hotel accommodations, a pre-selected event ticket itinerary, accredited ground transportation, breakfast and either lunch or dinner daily, sponsor hospitality, bilingual hosts/hostesses and much more. Airfare is not included in the package. The auction will commence April 15, 2007. Be on the look-out for more details in the near future.

  • July 20-21: Fort Lauderdale, Fla., CAP Level I @ USA Volleyball High Performance Championships, date just added with more information to come.

    NAMES AND NOTES FROM AROUND THE REGIONS
    According to the Big South Qualifier Net Gazette Newsletter, a concrete slab was transformed into 114 volleyball courts in under 10 hours thanks to 120 U.S. Marines and the Big South crew...The Florida High School Athletic Association announced its volleyball academic team champions per state classification. Kissimmee Osceola topped Class 6A with a 3.647 grade point average. Fort Myers held a 3.710 team grade point average to lead Class 5A. Jensen Beach compiled a cumulative 3.686 grade point average to top Class 4A. Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy, a Class 3A school, held a 3.821 grade point average to earn top team overall in a classifications. Naples St. John Neumann held a 3.682 grade point average to pace Class 2A, while Ocala St. John Lutheran compiled a 3.698 team grade point average...Maryland Juniors 17 Yellow National finished second at the Delmarva 18s Invitational Tournament on March 25 in Dover, Del. Maryland was the only U17 team to compete in the 18U event. For details, click here.
