U.S. WOMEN UPSET CUBA IN SECOND WEEKEND OF GRAND PRIX
The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team upset Cuba 25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22 during Group E action of the 2007 FIVB World Grand Prix on Friday at the Platinum Arena in Khabarovsk, Russia. Cuba, along with Brazil, completed the first weekend (Aug. 3-5) of World Grand Prix preliminary action with an undefeated record. Cuba is currently ranked fifth in the world rankings. MORE

U.S. MEN'S PATH TO BEIJING BEGINS IN ANAHEIM

Photo copyrighted by USA Volleyball USA Volleyball and the City of Anaheim have announced that Anaheim will host the 2007 NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship on Sept. 16-21 at the Anaheim Convention Center Arena. The NORCECA Championship is the first step in qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The top two finishers at the NORCECA Championship automatically qualify for the FIVB World Cup, on Nov. 18-Dec. 2 in Japan. The top three finishers at the World Cup will be the first teams to qualify for the 2008 Olympics (along with host country China). MORE

Misty May-Treanor (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (Santa Clara, Calif.) scored seven of the last nine points of the gold-medal match to win in two sets and capture their fourth beach volleyball title together on the Lake Woerthersee centre court on Aug. 4 at the US$600,000 A1 Grand Slam presented by Nokia in Klagenfurt, Austria. U.S. BLANKS MEXICO AT FIVB GIRLS YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP
U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team picked up its second win at the 2007 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship on Aug. 7 in Mexicali by blanking host-country Mexico 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-20). With the win, Team USA improves its overall record to 2-4 with a 1-2 mark in Pool G, while Mexico sports a 1-5 tournament mark and is 1-2 in the pool. MORE

CTVRTLIK LEADS 2007 INDUCTEES INTO HALL OF FAME
Three-time U.S. Olympian Bob Ctvrtlik heads the list of volleyball greats who will be inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame on Oct. 11 in Holyoke, Mass. Joining Ctvrtlik in the birthplace of volleyball will be Kerri Pottharst of Australia, Andrea Gardini of Italy, Dimitar Zlatanov of Bulgaria, Carlos Nuzman of Brazil and Yuan Weimin of China. CALIFORNIA GIRLS, BOYS DOMINATE U.S. JUNIOR OPEN BEACH

Medal winners at the USA Beach Junior Tour event in Long Beach, Calif.

USA Volleyball’s 2007 Beach Junior Tour rolled into Long Beach, Calif., on Aug. 5, for its ninth stop and the USA Junior Open Beach Volleyball Championships. Tandems from across California dominated the competition, with 28 of 32 teams hailing from the Golden State. Six divisions were featured in the girls’ bracket, while five were played out on the boys’ side. MORE

ENDEAVOuR PILOT IS MEMBER OF LONE STAR REGION
Lt. Col. Charles Hobaugh is the pilot for the Space Shuttle Endeavour, which launched on Aug. 7 on its way to the International Space Station. He is also a volleyball coach and referee from the Lone Star Region. His daughter, Stephanie, is beginning her freshman year at Centeneary College in Shreveport, La., where she will be on the women's volleyball team. MORE

    Austin Junior Volleyball mourns the loss of Madison Bingaman (Stony Point HS and AJV Class of '07). Madison and her mother were en route to begin her collegiate volleyball career at the University of Maryland Baltimore County when they were involved in a car wreck on Aug. 8 in Tennessee. Madison passed away and her mother is in the hospital in Memphis. Click here for more information... May-Treanor, nicknamed “Turtle,” has graciously agreed to purchase all the athlete’s tickets so they can enjoy some of the center court matches scheduled that day. She will also present Turtle/Special Olympic T-shirts to everyone in the group. Lunch will be provided by local sponsors Coca-Cola and LaRosa’s and afterwards May-Treanor will address the group in their own private tent.
