U.S MEN FALL TO RUSSIA IN FIVE AT WORLD CUP |

| A ticket to the 2008 Olympics slipped out of the U.S. Men's National Team's fingers as it fell to Russia in five sets (23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 17-25, 8-15) at the FIVB World Cup on Dec. 2 in Tokyo. Brazil, Bulgaria and Russia qualifed for the Olympics. The U.S. Men (8-3) finish fourth for the fourth straight World Cup. Their next chance to qualify for the Olympics will be at the NORCECA zone qualifier on Jan. 6-11 in Puerto Rico. MORE

U.S. WOMEN'S SITTING TEAM TO FACE CHINA |

The University of Central Oklahoma’s department of Disabled Sports and Events will host the U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball team competition against China on Dec. 3-6. UCO recently became the host site for the women’s team, holding the first training camp on its campus in May 2007, while the men’s team has been using UCO since 2005.

| Volleyball pioneer Heinz Schaal, born May 28, 1925, died Tuesday Nov. 20, 2007 at Bethesda North Hospital in Montgomery, Ohio, after a courageous battle with diabetes and Alzheimer’s. He was 82. During his lifetime, Heinz contributed significantly to the development of volleyball both within the YMCA and USA Volleyball. He was inducted into the YMCA Volleyball Hall of Fame with the Class of 2000. MORE

USA Volleyball’s Department of Indoor High Performance announced today details for its 6th Annual USA Volleyball High Performance Coaches’ Clinic to be held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., from Jan. 17-20, 2008. World-renowned Russian volleyball coach Nikolai Karpol, “The Howling Bear,” will serve as the event’s keynote speaker. Among his many accomplishments, Karpol has won two Olympic gold medals (1980, 1988), two Olympic silver medals (1992, 2000), FIVB World Championship gold medal in 1990 and three bronze medals (1994, 1998, 2002) in the same event. He was selected Coach of the Year by the FIVB in 1989 and 1991. MORE

Nana Meriwether, one of 15 women trying out with the U.S. Women’s National Team in January, competed for the title of Miss California on Nov. 23-25 after winning the title of Miss Malibu this summer. The title of Miss California ended up going to Raquel Beezley (Miss Barstow) after an accounting error originally gave it to Christina Silva (Miss Los Angeles).
